Our Garden

The Roots on the Roof garden is a student-led rooftop growing space located on the AMS Student Nest at the University of British Columbia.

More than just a garden, our rooftop space is a place for learning, connection, and community. Through hands-on gardening, students and community members can explore sustainable food production, develop new skills, and build relationships with the people and places connected to our food systems.

The garden provides opportunities to learn about urban agriculture, food sovereignty, and sustainable growing practices while creating a welcoming space where everyone can participate—regardless of previous gardening experience.

What We Grow

Throughout the growing season, Roots on the Roof cultivates a variety of plants that reflect the diversity and possibilities of urban gardening.

Our garden includes:

• Vegetables such as seasonal greens, root vegetables, and other crops suited to our rooftop growing environment
• Herbs that can be used for cooking, education, and community programming
• Flowers that support biodiversity and add beauty to the garden space
• Pollinator plants that help create habitat for bees and other beneficial insects

Our growing practices are guided by the seasons, the needs of the garden, and the interests of our community. Each year brings new opportunities to experiment with different crops, learn from past seasons, and adapt our approach.
